A specialist dementia nursing post for retired seafarers and their dependants has been set up by the Nautilus Welfare Fund as part of a pilot project to support its existing dementia services.
Admiral nurse Alison Ellison – whose role is also supported by the Alzheimer's Society’s Dementia Friends programme – has been appointed to provide free advice and support for residents at the Mariners' Park Estate who are affected by the condition, as well as advice to staff in the Care Home and Home Care service.
The part-time post is being funded as part of an 18-month project by the Seafarers Hospital Society and further extends the existing dementia services offered at the Care Home which received a glowing report last year by the Care Quality Commission.
An Alzheimer's Society Dementia Friends information session was also held at the Care Home and the Trinity House Hub as part of Dementia Awareness Week. The aim of the session is to help promote dementia-friendly communities.
